Brendan Donovan led off with a four-for-five clip Tuesday, June 17, leading the St Louis Cardinals to a 12-2 win over the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field.

Donovan’s leadoff single in the first was for nought, as starting pitcher Shane Smith overcame an error on a fielder’s choice to claim two fly outs and strike out Alec Burleson. Chicago scored first when Edgar Quero’s ground ball single to right field scored Miguel Vargas. Donovan’s second single put the Cardinals up for good, as he brought home Lars Nootbaar in a five-run second inning. Donovan would go on to double in the fourth and single in the sixth. The Cardinals added to their lead in the fifth, when their challenge paid off on a double-steal attempt. Replay determined that Willson Contreras beat the tag on his attempt to steal home after Nolan Arenado drew a walk.

Iván Herrera recorded four RBIs with his singles in the second and sixth, each of which scored a pair of runs. Burleson also recorded multiple RBIs, first when he led off the seventh with a home run, then an RBI single in the eighth. Victor Scott II launched a two-run home run in the ninth to cap the scoring, while the White Sox could only add a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly. Matthew Liberatore completed six innings and allowed both White Sox runs on five hits while striking out four to earn his fourth win of the year.

A Cincinnati win means that the Cardinals remain tied for third in the NL Central with a 38-35 record, seven game behind the Cubs and a game-and-a-half behind the Padres for the third wild card spot. Game two of the interleague series is Wednesday at 6:40 p.m., with Sonny Gray taking the mound for the Cardinals.
