Salvador Perez belted a pair of home runs and added an RBI double to lead the Kansas City Royals past the Texas Rangers 6-1 on Tuesday, June 17 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, snapping the Royals’ six-game losing skid.
Perez brought home Maikel Garcia with a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the first to follow up on Garcia’s RBI single. Perez sent his RBI double in the fourth inning to center field to score Vinnie Pasquantino, who led off the inning with a walk and stole second. After the Rangers’ Corey Seager scored on a fielding error by John Rave in the bottom of the fourth, Bobby Witt Jr responded in the fifth with a solo shot over the left-field fence. Perez’s leadoff home run in the sixth inning also went over the left-field fence to complete the scoring. That home run marked Perez’s 18th career game with multiple home runs, surpassing George Brett for the most in Royals history.
Seth Lugo struck out nine in his six innings of work to pick up the win. He allowed one run on three hits and one walk, but hit a pair of batters with pitches. Jack Leiter took the loss for Texas, going 5.2 innings and allowing all six runs on eight hits and two walks, while fanning a pair of batters.
The Royals are now 35-38, still 11.5 games behind Detroit in the AL Central and 2.5 games behind Seattle for the third wild card spot. Kris Bubic will take the mound for the second game in the series, set for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. We’ll have pregame coverage from 6:30 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
