The St. Louis Cardinals opened its doubleheader with the Chicago White Sox with a 5-4 victory behind comeback rally in the eighth inning.

The Cardinals had the bases loaded with no outs in the first inning, but only got one run home after a sacrifice fly from Willson Contreras. The White Sox answered by scoring a run in the fourth on a throwing error. The White Sox took their first lead of the game in the fifth on an RBI single from Miguel Vargas.

The Cardinals loaded the bases again in the sixth, scoring a run after a walk from Lars Nootbar to tie the game. Chicago regained the lead after a two-run home run from Michael A. Taylor.

St. Louis finally got to the Chicago bullpen in the eighth inning, when Willson Contreras connected with a game-tying, two-run home run off of Cam Booser. Later in the inning, Yohel Pozo drilled an RBI single to give St. Louis a 5-4 lead.

Ryan Helsley came on in the ninth, securing his 14th save. Andre Granillo was only called upon to get one out in the seventh inning, but was rewarded with his first career win. St. Louis starter Erick Fedde lasted five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts.

The Cardinals improve to 39-35. Game two of the doubleheader is underway at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago.
