The Royals bullpen was unable to get out of a pair of jams cleanly, ultimately allowing the San Diego Padres to walk off the series win by a 3-2 score Sunday afternoon at Petco Park.

Both starting pitchers Seth Lugo and Randy Vásquez exchanged scoreless frames for the first five innings, before Salvador Perez tagged Vásquez for a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give the Royals a 2-0 lead. Lugo made it into the seventh before allowing a leadoff double. With one out, the Royals turned to Angel Zerpa, who got a groundout but then walked the next two batters he faced. With the bases loaded, Lucas Erceg ended up allowing a single to right field by Jose Iglesias that tied the game.

The Royals attempted to regain the lead, but a successful challenge by the Padres resulted in a double play in the eighth, and Drew Waters’ attempt to score on Freddy Fermin’s double resulted in him being called out at the plate when he left the base path to evade the tag from catcher Elias Díaz. Iglesias reached on a fielders choice that allowed Luis Arraez to score the winning run.

Daniel Lynch IV took the loss, recording the lone out in the ninth, giving up two hits. Lugo ended up with a no decision despite his quality start of one run on two hits and seven strikeouts across 6.1 innings. Erceg was tagged with his second blown save of the season.

The Royals are now 38-40, two games behind Cleveland and Seattle for the third wild card spot, while 10.5 games behind Detroit in the AL Central. The Royals travel Monday as they prepare to start a three-game home series Tuesday night against Tampa Bay.
