Marshall Municipal Services began a series of street projects this week as crews work to fix up city streets prior to the start of the next school year.

Municipal Services Director Randy Cornine said contractors are utilizing two different methods to maintain the city’s street; a slurry seal method and mill and overlay.

Slurry seal involves contractors applying an asphalt emulsion mixture on existing pavement to extend the life of the roadway. Mill and overlay refers to a technique where crews remove the top layer of an existing pavement surface and replace it with a new layer of asphalt.

Cornine says mill and overlay work already began on portions of Vest and Yerby streets on Tuesday. The overlay portion of the work will take place on Thursday. The work will also take place on portions of Felix, Mitchell, Fairlawn, and Salt Pond Avenue in the coming weeks.

Slurry seal work is taking place on Elsworth, North, Marion, Garfield, Shamrock, Allen, Ohio, Brunswick, Redman, Mission, Rosehill, and Lafayette Avenue throughout the summer.

Cornine says the work should be complete by August 1, hoping to have the streets ready for the start of the next school year.
