Ian Happ took the first pitch from Erich Fedde and turned it into the game-winning home run, as the Chicago Cubs dominated the St Louis Cardinals 8-0 on Wednesday, June 25 at Busch Stadium.
Happ connected on Fedde’s pitch to the lower inside corner to send his 12th home run of the season over the right field fence. Happ would also have an RBI single in the fourth that was the final straw for Fedde, who also gave up home runs to Reese McGuire and Kyle Tucker, allowing seven runs on eight hits, two walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Michael Bush and Matt Shaw also had RBIs for the NL Central leaders, while Matthew Boyd limited the Cardinals to three hits in his six innings of work, striking out three for his seventh win of the season.
The Cardinals slipped to third in the division, 3.5 games behind the Cubs and a game behind Milwaukee for second. They’re also a half-game behind San Diego and San Francisco for the third wild card spot. The Cardinals still have a chance to clinch the series win Thursday afternoon, with Andre Pallante getting the start. First pitch at Busch Stadium is at 1:15 p.m.
