The St Louis Cardinals spotted the Cleveland Guardians six runs in the fourth, but were able to claim them back and then some in a 9-6 win at Progressive Field on Saturday, June 28.

Brendan Donovan had the game’s first run, digging in on the first pitch from Slade Cecconi to send it over the right-field fence. Cleveland wouldn’t score until the fifth, when Kyle Manzardo tied the game with a lead-off home run of his own. Daniel Schneemann grounded out to give Cleveland the lead, followed by an RBI double from Nolan Jones, two-run home run from Gabriel Arias, and RBI triple from Steven Kwan. The Cardinals wouldn’t take long to begin the comeback effort, scoring two in the top of the fifth from a fly-ball single by Alec Burleson. That was enough to chase Cecconi from the game.

Matt Festa came in to record the final out, but was unable to get any Cardinals out in the fifth, giving up four straight singles to start the inning, including RBIs to Nolan Gorman and Yohel Pozo. An RBI double by Victor Scott the Second tied the game, and a sacrifice fly from Brendan Donovan gave the Cardinals the lead for good. Masyn Winn grounded out to score the fifth run of the inning for the Redbirds, the only run charged to Tim Herrin in his first blown save of the year. Willson Contreras added a home run in the ninth to complete the scoreline for St Louis.

Festa took the loss, charged with four earned runs on four hits with just one out to his name. Matt Svanson pitched an unblemished fifth inning with one punchout to earn his first win of the season, while Ryan Helsley notched his 16th save of the year, as well as the 100th of his career.

The Cardinals are now tied for the third wild card spot at 46-38, sitting third in the NL Central with a 3.5 game deficit to the Cubs. It’s an early start for the Cardinals as they look for a sweep on the lakefront, with first pitch at 11:05 a.m. Matthew Liberatore will get the start for St Louis.
