The Kansas City Royals used 14 hits to break their six-game losing streak, overwhelming the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-5 on Saturday, June 28 at Kauffman Stadium for their first win at home since May 31.
Maikel Garcia brought the Royals’ first two runs home with a two-out double in the third inning. Jonathan India had four hits on the day, including a single in the fifth that brought home Kyle Isbel. Bobby Witt Jr had four hits as well, also singling in the fifth. That set up Vinnie Pasquantino, who broke the game open with a three-run home run to make it 6-0 Royals. Freddie Freeman responded with a solo home run off Daniel Lynch IV in the seventh, only for Pasquantino and Salvador Perez to answer back with RBI doubles. The Dodgers made things interesting in the ninth, when they claimed four runs off five hits and a walk from Sam Long.
Seth Lugo went 5.2 innings, keeping the Dodgers off the board despite allowing five walks and four hits. He struck out eight batters, including the first two plate appearances by Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani would strike out a third time in the game, and as the starting pitcher allowed one hit and one walk in two innings, while recording a punchout. A fastball that Pasquantino hit into a double play that ended the first inning registered at 102 miles per hour, the fastest recorded pitch in Ohtani’s career. Ben Casparius took the loss for LA, allowing six runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out four across four innings.
The Royals are now 39-44, remaining 12.5 games behind Detroit in the AL Central while 3.5 behind Seattle for the third wild card spot. Kris Bubic will get the start in the rubber match, with pregame at 12:30 p.m. and first pitch at 1:10 p.m. on KMMO AM 1300.
