Bobby Witt Jr’s RBI double with no outs in the first gave the Kansas City Royals an early boost, but a 62-minute rain delay didn’t faze the Los Angeles Dodgers as they kept the Royals at bay the rest of the game, defeating KC 5-1 on Sunday, June 29.

Witt’s line drive to left field brought home Jonathan India, giving the Royals early hope that they would build on yesterday’s win and capture their first series win at home since sweeping the White Sox in early May. Instead, opener Lou Trivino got the next three Royals out, then turned things over to Justin Wrobleski, who proceeded to limit the Royals to three hits and a walk over the next six innings, striking out six. He took the mound after the Dodgers claimed the lead in the top of the second, when Enrique Hernández sent a two-run home run to left-center field.

Will Smith added a solo home run in the sixth to make the score 3-1 Dodgers. The visitors and NL leaders would add two more runs in the seventh, first with Max Muncy’s RBI double, then a single from Miguel Rojas that scored Muncy. Wrobleski picked up his fourth win of the year, while Kris Bubic took the loss, going five innings and allowing two runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out five.

The Royals (39-45) conclude a dismal June at Kauffman Stadium, having gone 1-12 at home this month. In the process, KC has fallen even further behind in the standings, now 13.5 games behind Detroit for the AL Central lead and 4.5 games behind Seattle in the wild card standings. They’ll face those very Mariners after jetting west for the start of a four-game series in the Pacific Northwest. Michael Wacha is tabbed to start, with first pitch at 8:40 p.m. Pregame is from 8 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
