A Salisbury teen experienced moderate injury Tuesday, July 1 after his vehicle crashed into barriers at a closed bridge in Chariton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that the 16-year-old ignored signs along Route PP a mile east of Salisbury that the bridge over the Middle Fork of the Chariton River was closed, and continued eastbound at around 7:50 p.m. His pickup then struck barricades and a Jersey barrier. The teenager was taken to a Columbia hospital for treatment. Troopers say he was not wearing his seat belt.

The Missouri Department of Transportation had announced the immediate closure of the bridge last month, after a routine inspection found significant deterioration of the bridge deck. The bridge is slated for replacement this summer as part of the Northwest Bridge Bundle.
