Kansas City Current midfielder Claire Hutton scored her first goal on international duty, when her header in the 36th minute contributed to a 3-0 victory for the U.S. Women’s National Team over Canada on Wednesday, July 2, in Washington, D.C.
The 19-year-old was making her sixth appearance for the U.S., and was able to head the corner kick from Rose Lavelle into the back of the net, past Canadian keeper Kailen Sheridan. Sam Coffey and Yazmeen Ryan also scored for the U.S., who won their third game in seven days. The U.S. dominated their neighbors, with 22 shot attempts including eight on goal, while Canada only attempted seven shots all game, with three shots on goal saved by Claudia Dickey. The U.S. also had all six corner kicks.
Hutton was among three players from the Current who appeared in Wednesday’s friendly. Michelle Cooper also started for the U.S., while Canada’s Nichelle Prince was subbed in during the second half. Izzy Rodriguez was available as a sub for the U.S.
The U.S. women have their next two contests in September, against South Korea and Japan.
Two goals in the first 15 minutes from Diego Luna provided the gateway for the U.S. Men’s National Team to advance to the Gold Cup championship match, as the U.S. defeated Guatemala 2-1 on Wednesday, July 2 at Energizer Park.
Luna’s left-footed shot in the fourth minute put the U.S. on the board, followed by a goal from his right foot 11 minutes later for the Real Salt Lake midfielder to silence the many Guatemala fans that had made their way to St Louis. Malik Tillman recorded an assist on both goals. Guatemala did receive a brief glimmer of hope when Olger Escobar put the visitors on the board in the 80th minute, after their 13-shot barrage in the first half was for naught.
Following Mexico’s 1-0 win over Honduras in Santa Clara, California, on Wednesday night, the Gold Cup final will again feature the U.S. and Mexico. The title game is set for 6 p.m. Sunday at NRG Stadium in Houston.
