The Kansas City Royals were unfazed by Thursday night’s later start time, as they scored all of their runs in the seventh inning. That inning proved to be all KC would need in the 3-2 win at Seattle to split the four-game series.
Bobby Witt Jr fueled the Royals rally with his line-drive single to center that scored Kyle Isbel, tying the game. He along with Jonathan India would plate the go-ahead runs for KC on Vinnie Pasquantino’s single, with Witt able to get around the tag of catcher Cal Raleigh at the plate. That play would prove to be the game-winner, as Dominic Canzone had a line-drive home run to center field to lead off the ninth. Despite the home run, Carlos Estévez struck out two of the next three batters he faced to lock down his 24th save of the season.
Seth Lugo got the win, going 6.1 innings, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out seven. His only run allowed was a solo home run in the fourth to Jorge Polanca. The Royals roughed up Carlos Vargas, handing him his fifth blown save of the year, while Casey Legumina was dealt the loss.
The Royals are en route to Arizona for an interleague series against the Diamondbacks starting Friday. They’ll arrive in the desert with a 41-47 record, 13 games behind Detroit in the AL Central and four-and-a-half games behind Seattle for the third wild card spot. Kris Bubic will get the start, with first pitch at 8:40 p.m. Pregame coverage starts at 8 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
The St Louis Cardinals went another day without scoring runs, though it was because Thursday was a travel day. The Redbirds, who have been shut out in their last three games and five of their last eight contests, will face the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Friday. Miles Mikolas will get the start, with first pitch at 1:20 p.m.
