Home runs in the fourth by Bobby Witt Jr and Salvador Perez provided the one-two punch needed for the Kansas City Royals to shut out the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-0 on Sunday, July 6 at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Witt connected on the first pitch of the at-bat from starter Anthony DeSclafani and sent it 425 feet to left center field for the first run of the day. Two batters later, Salvador Perez sent his blast toward the same spot. The Royals would add two more runs in the fifth, starting with Jac Caglianone getting hit by a pitch and then stealing second, followed by three consecutive singles. Michael Lorenzen went seven innings in the win, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out seven.

The Royals went 4-3 on the road trip west, improving their record to 43-48. With Cleveland losing their tenth straight game, the Royals are now firmly third in the AL Central, still 14 games behind Detroit and 5.5 games behind Seattle for the third wild card spot. Another interleague series awaits KC, this time at home as Pittsburgh travel to Kauffman Stadium. Noah Cameron will get the start, with first pitch at 6:40 p.m. Pregame coverage begins at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.

During the game, Major League Baseball announced that shortstop Bobby Witt Jr and starting pitcher Kris Bubic were named reserves for the American League at next week’s All-Star Game in Atlanta. It’ll be Witt’s second straight All-Star honor, while Bubic has earned his first nod. Brendan Donovan is the lone representative from the St Louis Cardinals for the National League.
