St Louis City fell into a hole early, then ended up keeping themselves there, as an own goal was the difference-maker in Saturday night’s 3-2 loss to Real Salt Lake in Utah.
Real scored early, with a goal in the sixth minute from Noel Caliskan set up by a corner kick. The score became 2-0 late in the half, when Diogo Gonçalves bagged his goal into the top right corner. After having three shots blocked in stoppage time, City continued pressing for their first goal, ultimately breaking through in the 51st minute, when João Klauss headed his shot into the back of the net. The rest of the half featured Josh Yaro on both sides of the scoring sheet. Yaro intercepted a pass to Zavier Gozo in the 64th minute, only to slide the ball into his own net to make it 3-1 Salt Lake. Yaro would redeem himself 17 minutes later as he converted a corner kick into City’s second goal of the night.
Time of possession was nearly even, while City outshot Salt Lake 17-15. However, City’s injury woes remained evident, as all three players called up from City’s MLS Next Pro squad saw playing time, including starting defender Jaziel Orozco. Forward Mykhi Joiner and midfielder Tyson Pearce were subbed in during the second half.
City remain 14th in the Western Conference on 15 points. They return home next Sunday, July 13 to host Portland, with kickoff at 6 p.m.
