Brendan Donovan’s selection to his first All-Star Game was the only bit of good news for the St Louis Cardinals on Sunday, July 6, as the Chicago Cubs torched the Cardinals 11-0 to wrap up their three-game series at Wrigley Field.

Matthew Boyd and Jordan Wicks combined to allow just six Cardinal hits and one walk, along with 11 strikeouts, while Daniel Palencia recorded the final two outs to complete the shutout. Meanwhile, the Cubs got to Erick Fedde early, starting with Pete Crow-Armstrong’s RBI single in the first. He was done after allowing a double and two walks in the second. Reliever John King didn’t fare much better, giving up a two-run RBI single by Kyle Tucker in the second, then loading the bases to start the third before Reese McGuire singled in the first of five runs in the frame. Matt Svanson allowed two runs in the fourth and a Seiya Suzuki home run in the fifth, Suzuki’s 25th of the year.

The loss now has the Cardinals (48-43) 6.5 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central, as well as a game behind San Diego and San Francisco for the third wild card spot. The Cardinals have the day off as they return home to face the Washington Nationals. Andre Pallante will have the start for Tuesday’s game, with first pitch at 6:45 p.m.
