One of the bills signed into law this week by Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe is prompting the Missouri State High School Activities Association to declare a special ballot for potential changes to the association’s bylaws.

Governor Kehoe signed Senate Bill 63 into law Wednesday, July 9, which now requires public schools and charters to allow students from a home school or are receiving full-time virtual education to participate on their extracurricular athletics and fine arts programs. MSHSAA Communications Director Andrew Kauffman tells KMMO Sports that the association has been working on language that, if approved by member schools next month, will bring MSHSAA in line with the new state law when it takes effect Aug. 28.

Kauffman says the final language that schools will vote on is still being finalized, as well as a summary of what each school’s key requirements are for complying with the new law, along with supporting resources. He stresses that MSHSAA by-law changes require a vote of the association’s over 700 member schools.

The special ballot will go to each school’s administrators and activities directors between Aug. 11 and 22. Last month, the MSHSAA Board of Directors ratified ten by-law and constitution changes voted in by schools on their spring ballot, including the recognition of Girls’ Flag Football and Unified Track & Field as emerging sports.
