Haley Hopkins picked up her first two goals at CPKC Stadium, as she led the Kansas City Current to a 3-0 victory Saturday, July 12 over Brazilian side Palmeiras in the inaugural Teal Rising Cup.
Hopkins was the final leg of a drive across the pitch in the 34th minute, when midfielder Bailey Feist relayed the volley across the penalty box to set up Hopkins’ goal at close range. The two connected again ten minutes later to make the score 2-0. The Current extended their lead early in the second half, when a low shot by Flora Marta Lacho was mishandled by Palmeiras’ goalkeeper. Forward Alex Pfeiffer returned from the season-ending injury list as a substitute in the second half, while Current keeper Laurel Ivory earned a clean sheet in her first appearance for the team. The Current were put to the test just before stoppage time, when Feist was sent off with a straight red card.
The Current will now face Corinthians SC for the championship Tuesday night at 8 p.m., following Corinthians’ 1-0 win over the Chicago Stars after a stoppage time goal.
