A Moberly man is facing a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a 23-year-old woman.

Court documents accuse 68-year-old David Heyde of shooting a woman who was on the porch of his home on East Logan Street the afternoon of July 6. According to the probable cause statement, the two got into an argument over feeding birds in his yard, when the argument turned physical. Heyde told authorities who responded to his emergency call around 7:30 p.m. that the woman had struck him in the face, which resulted in him firing his handgun twice.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, exhibiting one gunshot wound to the right side of her chest. A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper who was also called to the scene noted in the probable cause statement that Heyde did not show any signs of bruising or swelling on his face where he said he was struck. The Patrol later identified the victim as 23-year-old Bailey Scott of Moberly.

Heyde was arrested Thursday and charged with one count of second-degree murder. He’s been transferred to the Macon County Jail and is being held with no bond. Heyde’s arraignment is set for Monday afternoon at the Randolph County Courthouse in Huntsville.
