Opportunities for fifth-graders to explore their interests are growing in the Sedalia School District 200, with one after-school program expanding and another looking to do so.

At last month’s meeting, the Board of Education approved a plan to expand the junior high basketball program to grades five and six. Supt. Dr Todd Fraley says the district identified playing opportunities as a need, with the hope of preparing students for interscholastic competition as a Tiger when they reach seventh grade.

Meanwhile, members of the Smith-Cotton High School JROTC Program presented a proposal to establish a “Tiger Tots” after-school club, where cadets will lead fifth-graders through the basics of preparing for team drill competitions.

No action was taken on the proposal. The next Sedalia 200 Board of Education meeting is Tuesday, July 29th at the Heckart Performing Arts Center.
