The Kansas City Current stuck to their formula of early goals and tenacious defense to win the inaugural Teal Rising Cup, defeating Brazil’s Corinthians SC 2-1 on Tuesday, July 15 at CPKC Stadium.
Michelle Cooper scored the Current’s first goal three minutes into the contest when midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta sliced the ball through the Corinthinans defense to set up Cooper’s score, beating keeper Nicole Ramos on her shot. Cooper then set up forward Mary Long in the 22nd minute for Long’s first professional goal. Corinthians pulled a goal back with a header from Gabrielia Maria Demoner. The Current came close to adding a third goal in the second half, when Izzy Rodriguez’ drive at goal ended with the ball striking the crossbar in the 54th minute. Cooper’s follow-up effort was also denied. Current goalkeeper Laurel Ivory was also tested, making a diving stop in the 74th minute to save an equalizer.
Haley Hopkins was named the Teal Rising Cup’s MVP following her two goals Saturday against Palmeiras. The Current will return to NWSL action August 1 when they visit Racing Louisville.
