All-Stars from the Kansas City Royals and St Louis Cardinals made pivotal contributions that led to Tuesday night’s swing-off at the midseason classic in Atlanta, after the American League and National League were deadlocked at six runs apiece.
Bobby Witt Jr drove in fellow Royal Maikel Garcia in the seventh inning with an RBI groundout, and had a single in the ninth inning that brought home Byron Buxton, to help engineer the American League’s comeback. Garcia set up Witt’s first RBI when he took a walk, then advanced to third on a throwing error during his attempt to steal second. Garcia’s other at-bat ended with a barehanded play in the ninth by Eugenia Suárez.
The American League needed the RBIs from Witt after Royals starter Kris Bubic was charged with three of the four runs the National League scored in the sixth inning. Bubic allowed two hits and a walk, including a single to the Cardinals’ Brendan Donovan, who came home on Pete Alonso’s three-run home run. Donovan was the only Cardinal to appear in the game, but was also the only player with multiple hits in the game, as he recorded a single off Royals closer Carlos Estévez. Estévez also allowed a walk, but recorded three strikeouts during his seventh-inning appearance.
Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber was named the game’s MVP after hitting three home runs in the swing-off to win the All-Star Game for the National League.
