The Kansas City Royals stumbled out of the gate to begin the second half of the 2025 MLB season, falling to the Miami Marlins 8-7 in ten innings.

Seth Lugo gave up five runs in the first three innings, which included home runs off the bats of Jesús Sánchez and Kyle Stowers. Lugo would finish with six innings, giving up five runs on eighth hits with five punchouts.

The Royals began to claw their way back in the fourth after Nick Loftin drove home a run with an infield single. That was followed up by John Rave’s first Major League homer, a three-run shot to right center field.

Trailing by a run in the ninth, Rave came up clutch by hitting a game-tying solo homer to help send the game into extra innings.

In the tenth inning, the Royals took their first and only lead of the night after Adam Frazier came through with a double to drive home two runs. The Marlins didn’t go out quietly, though, as Agustín Ramírez drove home a run with an RBI single, which was then followed by Stowers’ two-run, walk-off homer.

Carlos Estevez took the loss, giving up all three runs in the tenth while only recording one out.

Kansas City falls to 47-51, 12 games back of Detroit in the AL Central, and 5.5 games out of the third wild card spot. The Royals will look to even the series today. Pregame will begin at 2:30, with first pitch at 3:10 p.m. on KMMO AM 1300.
