The Arizona Diamondbacks struck Sonny Gray and the St Louis Cardinals early and often, rattling the starter for 11 hits in a 10-1 drubbing Saturday, July 19 in Phoenix.

Gray gave up three runs in the first, including the first of two home runs he would pitch to Eugenio Suárez. Singles by Blaze Alexander and Geraldo Perdomo in the second, another Perdomo single in the fourth, along with a triple to Corbin Carroll and double for Adrian Del Castillo, all resulted in RBIs charged to Gray. A catcher’s interference call in the first resulted in eight earned runs being charged to Gray in his 3.1 innings, where he did record five strikeouts in the loss. Perdomo added an RBI in the eighth with a ground-out.

On the other side, Arizona starter Ryne Nelson went six innings for the win, allowing just one run on four hits and a walk while striking out four. The only Cardinals run was a home run by Alec Burleson in the sixth inning. The Cardinals stranded seven base runners and went oh-for-seven with runners in scoring position, unable to capitalize on their three doubles.

The Cardinals are now 51-48, 8.5 games behind Chicago for the NL Central lead and 2.5 games behind San Diego for the third wild card spot. They’re at risk of being swept in the desert, and will send Miles Mikolas to the mound for the start Sunday afternoon. First pitch is at 3:10 p.m.
