The 4-H and FFA Horse Show is underway at the fairgrounds in Sedalia, marking the start of contests at the 123rd Missouri State Fair.

The first contests began Thursday, July 24 for riders from around the state, showcasing their skill in guiding their horses through various riding styles and techniques. Mallory Black of Linn County is among the members of the South Eagle 4-H Club competing this weekend, riding her quarter horse Ava. She says she’s enjoyed getting to work with Ava since March, having worked with several other horses in her five years of learning to ride.

Black and Ava will compete in several events this weekend, with Black identifying Western Pleasure as her favorite event.

4-H and FFA Horse Show events will take place through Sunday at the Mathewson Exhibition Center and State Fair Coliseum. The 123rd Missouri State Fair officially kicks off Aug. 7, with livestock events beginning Aug. 5.
