The Slater Schools Board of Education’s cover-to-cover review of board policies continued at their meeting Tuesday, July 22, including three that will need updated before a new state law takes effect next month.

The board approved the final reading of policies pertaining to negotiations with faculty and staff representatives, as well as a second reading of policies pertaining to instruction, and first reading of student policies. However, a handful of these policies will need to change in order to comply with Senate Bill 63, which will allow home-school and virtual education students to try out for extracurricular sports and activities at their designated public or charter school. Slater Supt. Dr Terry Lorenz says the board needed to table the slate of updates to make sure everyone was up to speed on the changes that have to be in place before the bill becomes law Aug. 28.

One policy change was approved, banning the use of cell phones during the school day.  Lorenz says students will be allowed to keep them in their backpacks but not have them out until after school.  Slater School Board next meets Aug. 26, which will begin with their annual tax rate hearing.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the board approved establishing a shooting sports program, under the direction of Zach Crews. They also reviewed and approved a proposed restructuring of titles and salaries among Slater’s football coaches.
