The St Louis Cardinals were limited to four singles and hit into three double plays, as the Miami Marlins posted a 5-0 shutout Tuesday, July 29 at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals only reached third base twice in the game, doing so in the third and fifth innings, but could not bring the runners home as they went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven on the bases. By comparison, the Marlins claimed a dozen hits off Cardinals pitching, including eight off starter Sonny Gray. That included a two-run home run by Graham Pauley in the second, and Otto Lopez RBI in the fifth. A double from Eric Wagaman and triple by Xavier Edwards in the sixth capped the scoring.

Gray took the loss, allowing three runs in five innings with eight hits and a walk, while punching out five. Sandy Alcantara pitched five scoreless innings in the win, allowing three hits and three walks while recording four strikeouts.

The Cardinals (55-54) sit ten games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central and 4.5 games behind San Diego for the third wild card. The series concludes Wednesday evening when Miles Mikolas gets the start. First pitch is at 6:45 p.m.
