Salvador Perez was the hero in the tenth inning for the Royals, driving home a walk-off single to give Kansas City a 1-0 win over the Atlanta Braves.
With injuries to the starting rotation, the Royals executed a bullpen game, using nine different pitcher to shutout a potent Braves lineup over ten innings. Kansas City pitching allowed five hits and recorded ten strikeouts.
The Royals offense didn’t perform much better, only recording three hits in the game. The deadlock was finally broken in the bottom of the tenth, when Perez drove home automatic runner MJ Melendez with a single to right-center field. The hit was Perez’s ninth walk-off plate appearance of his career, tying him for third most in Royals history, only trailing Amos Otis (12) and George Brett (15).
Sam Long earned the win with a scoreless tenth, recording two punchouts.
Kansas City improves to 54-55, keeping pace with the Detroit Tigers, who finished off a sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Royals also remain 3.5 games back of Seattle for the third wild card. Kansas City has an off-day on Thursday before traveling to Toronto for a three-games series against the Blue Jays.
