A Jesús Sánchez home run in the third inning provided the only scoring in the Miami Marlins’ 2-0 shutout of the St Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, July 30 at Busch Stadium.
Sánchez connected on a 1-0, one-out pitch from Miles Mikolas to send it to center field. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth for the Cardinals, starting pitcher Cal Quantrill struck out Brendan Donovan and coaxed Iván Herrera into a groundout to account for three of the eight baserunners stranded by the Cardinals. St Louis also grounded into a double play, resulting in the Cardinals going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
Mikolas finished the night after six innings, recording a quality start despite it being his eighth loss of the year. He allowed both runs on five hits while striking out five. The loss now has the Cardinals (55-55) at .500 and turning into sellers at the trade deadline, with a ten-game deficit to the Brewers in the NL Central and a 5.5 game gap to the San Diego Padres.
The Cardinals will have Thursday off to see how the trade deadline unfolds, before jetting west to San Diego for a three-game series against the Padres.
