The St. Louis Cardinals fell to the San Diego Padres 4-1 on Friday, falling below .500 on the season.

The game was a pitcher’s duel through the first four innings, with Matthew Liberatore and Nick Pivetta mowing down the opposing lineups.

The Cardinals struck first in the fifth with a solo homer from Willson Contreras, his 15th of the year.

The Padres tied the game in the bottom of the inning after an error by Contreras at first, allowing Jake Cronenworth to score. The Padres would then take the lead after an RBI single from Elias Diaz and a two-run single from Jackson Merrill to make it 4-1 San Diego.

All four runs were charged to Liberatore, who exited after one out in the fifth.

The Cardinals fall to 55-56, slipping to 11 games back of Milwaukee in the NL Central. The Cardinals will look to even the series today. Michael McGreevy will get the start. First pitch is at 9:10 p.m.
