An RBI single from Nolan Gorman ended the shutout bid in the ninth inning, but the San Diego Padres otherwise flexed their way to a 7-3 win over the St Louis Cardinals on Sunday, Aug. 3 at Petco Park.

Gorman’s RBI came after Adrian Morejon loaded the bases with singles to Iván Herrera and Alec Burleson and a walk to Willson Contreras. Jordan Walker followed up with his own RBI single, creating a save situation for Padres closer Robert Suarez. Lars Nootbaar added a sacrifice fly to score the third run, but despite allowing another single to load the bases, Suarez shut the doors on the Cardinals with a lineout by Masyn Winn.

The Padres took control of the game in the fourth when Jake Cronenworth belted a two-run home run in the fourth. The game appeared to get out of reach in the seventh, when with one out and the bases loaded, Jackson Merrill brought all three runners home with a triple down the right foul line. He would come home on a Xander Bogaerts sacrifice fly. Ramón Laureano added a home run in the eighth to cap the Padres’ scoring.

Andre Pallante was tagged with his eighth loss of the year, allowing two runs in five innings off five hits and three walks, while striking out four.

The Cardinals drop to 56-57, 12 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central and six-and-a-half behind the Padres for the third wild card spot. It’s a drive up Interstate 5 for the Redbirds as they begin a three-game set at Dodger Stadium in LA on Monday. Sonny Gray will get the start, with first pitch at 9:10 p.m.
