A four-run fourth inning gave the St Louis Cardinals the boost needed to overtake the San Diego Padres in an 8-5 win Saturday, Aug. 2 at Petco Park.

Ivan Herrera led the Cardinals with a three-for-four night, including a lead-off single in the fifth inning that began to set up Masyn Winn’s two-out, two-RBI double to put the Cardinals ahead for good. The Cardinals had fallen behind early when Manny Machado singled in the game’s first run, but was tagged out at second. The Padres added a pair of runs in the second with a Ramón Laureano triple and Freddy Fermin groundout, then made the score 4-0 in the third with Jackson Merrill’s eighth home run of the year.

The Cardinals rallied to tie the game in the fourth, getting on the board with Nolan Gorman’s single to center field that brought home Willson Contreras and advanced Winn to second. Pedro Pagés would knot the game up with a three-run blast to the warehouse in left field. After Winn’s go-ahead double in the fifth, the Cardinals would have two runs in the ninth, with a single from Alec Burleson and sacrifice fly from Contreras. The Padres would attempt a comeback in the ninth, but could only plate one by way of a Fermin single, resulting in JoJo Romero’s first save of the season.

Despite the rough start, Michael McGreevy lasted six innings to pick up the win, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four. The Cardinals tagged Randy Vásquez with the loss, as he allowed five runs on eight hits with three punchouts.

The Cardinals are back at .500 with a 56-56 record, 11 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central and 5.5 behind the Padres for the final wild card spot. The series in San Diego wraps up Sunday afternoon at 3:10 p.m., when Andre Pallante gets the start.
