Despite a record-setting home run from Salvador Perez, the Kansas City Royals were unable to contain Toronto’s offense, falling to the Blue Jays 4-2 on Saturday, Aug. 2 at Rogers Centre.

Perez’ home run in the sixth inning was his 20th of the year, marking his ninth season with that many home runs. He surpasses George Brett for the most seasons with 20-plus home runs in franchise history. The home run also put the Royals on the board after they had allowed three runs in the third inning. Davis Schneider singled in Myles Straw and Tyler Heineman to start the scoring, then advanced to second on a throwing error by John Rave. Bo Bichette brought Schneider home with another single. The Royals would add a run in the seventh with Kyle Isbel’s sacrifice fly to score Adam Frazier, only for the Blye Jays to claim the run back after the stretch with Ernie Clement singling home Joey Loperfido.

Mizzou alum Max Scherzer allowed one run and five hits in six innings, striking out five to get his second win of the season. Noah Cameron went 6.1 innings in the loss, charged with all four runs on six hits and one walk with one strikeout.

The Royals are now 55-56, 9.5 games behind Detroit in the AL Central and 3.5 behind Seattle for the third wild card spot. Seth Lugo will have the start in the deciding game of the series. Pregame begins at noon on KMMO AM 1300, with first pitch at 12:37 p.m.
