The Marshall City Council fielded comments and discussion Tuesday, Aug. 5 on plans to build sidewalks along two of the city’s streets.

The public hearing at the beginning of Tuesday’s city council meeting was required as part Marshall receiving the Transportation Alternatives Program grant to fund new sidewalks along West College and South Miami. A representative for Engineering Surveys and Services says the new sidewalks will stretch along the south side of College from the Break Time convenience store to Miami, then turn south to Vers Street. Mayor Craig Thompson says he’s excited to see this project come together.

Additional improvements for the intersections of College and Miami, and College and U.S. Route 65, were mentioned but are not covered by the grant. Thompson says he welcomes additional input from residents on the project.

Also Tuesday night, the Marshall City Council agreed to a task order with Engineering Surveys and Services for survey work surrounding a sinkhole behind the former Eastwood School. The council also approved the appointment of Jamie Nichols to fill a vacancy on the Planning and Zoning Commission, completing a term that expires in November 2026. Fourth Ward Councilman Harold Simmons was named the city’s employer representative to the Missouri Local Government Employees Retirement System (LAGERS).
