The St. Louis Cardinals overcame an early lead from the Los Angeles Dodgers, rallying in the eighth and ninth for a 5-3 win on Wednesday, August 6.

The Cardinals got on the board in the third inning when Brendan Donovan drove home the game’s first run with a bunt single.

The Dodgers took the lead in the bottom of the inning after Shohei Ohtani belted a two-run homer to center field. The home run was Ohtani’s 39th of the season and his 1,000th career hit.

The Dodgers added another run in the fourth after a throwing error from Pedro Pagés. That would be it for Matthew Liberatore, who went four innings, giving up three runs (two earned)

St. Louis got a run back in the sixth thanks to an RBI groundout from Lars Nootbar. The Redbirds would then rally in the eighth as Alec Burleson and Masyn Winn got on base with singles. Jordan Walker came through with an RBI single to tie the game. Winn would then score the go-ahead run on the same play after a throwing error from Dodgers third baseman Alex Freeland.

The Cardinals would add some insurance in the ninth after an RBI double from Nootbar.

Riley O’Brien picked up the save, recording the final four outs. JoJo Romero picked up his fourth win of the season, tossing a scoreless inning with a strikeout.

St. Louis improves to 58-58, still fourth in the NL Central and 5.5 games back of the Mets for the third wild card. The Cardinals have an off day Thursday before returning home to host a series with the Chicago Cubs. First pitch on Friday begins at 7:15 p.m. at Busch Stadium.
