It was seventh heaven for Jonathan India, as from the seventh spot in the Kansas City Royals lineup, the right-handed batter sent a three-run blast in the seventh inning over the Green Monster to lead the Royals to a 7-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, Aug. 7 at Fenway Park.
India was the designated hitter last night and went two-for-four, also reaching in the second on a fielding error. His replacement in the leadoff spot was also successful, as Mike Yastrzemski went two-for-three, including a ground-rule double in the third. Yastrzemski would come home on Bobby Witt Jr’s single. The Royals took the lead in the fourth, when India’s first hit of the game was followed by singles from John Rave and Kyle Isbel that scored two. The Royals added insurance in the eighth with an RBI single by Vinnie Pasquantino, while Boston clawed a run back with two outs in the eighth.
Michael Wacha gave up two runs in the first, but regrouped to complete six innings of work for his sixth win of the season. He allowed five hits while striking out three. Carlos Estévez pitched a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts in a non-save situation. Boston pitchers struggled at times, as despite ten strikeouts, they hit five Royals batters with pitches. The Royals got a dozen hits and two walks off the Red Sox, denying them the sweep.
The Royals improve to 57-58 on the year, 8.5 games behind Detroit for the AL Central lead and four games behind the Yankees for the third wild card spot, with Cleveland and Texas also in front of the Royals. KC will have Thursday off as they travel to Minneapolis for a three-game series with the Twins.
