
The St. Louis Cardinals celebrated Yadier Molina’s return to St. Louis with a 5-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday, August 8.
Molina returned to the St. Louis dugout in uniform as a guest coach for this series.
The Cardinals seized the lead in the second inning after an RBI infield single off the bat of Jordan Walker. St. Louis threatened more damage in the second by loading the bases with no outs, but Chicago starter Matthew Boyd escaped trouble with a strikeout and a double play.
The Cardinals added to their lead in the fifth after a sacrifice fly from Ivan Herrera and an RBI single from Willson Contreras. St. Louis poured in on in the sixth thanks to Jordan Walker’s solo homer and an RBI single from Pedro Pages.
Michael McGreevy went six shutout innings, allowing six hits and one walk, with three punchouts. Matt Svanson, JoJo Romero, and Riley O’Brien shut the Cubs down to seal the win.
The Cardinals get back over .500 with the win, but remain 13 games back of Milwaukee for the NL Central lead. St. Louis is also 4.5 games back in the wild card.
The Cardinals will go for the series win against the Cubs today. Andre Pallante will get the start for St. Louis. First pitch begins at 6:15 p.m.
