A pitchers’ duel came down to the seventh inning Sunday, Aug. 10 in St Louis, as despite being limited to four hits, the Cardinals made all of them productive as they defeated the Chicago Cubs 3-2.

Cardinals starter Sonny Gray and Cubs starter Shota Imanaga both pitched gems, with each of them striking out the side once, en route to nine Ks for Imanaga and seven for Gray. The Cardinals got to Imanaga first, when Thomas Saggese singled to lead off the third, followed by Pedro Pagés’ two-run home run to left center field. The Cubs took advantage of a fielding error in the fifth, as Matt Shaw tied the game with a two-run blast of his own that scored Dansby Swanson. Imanaga would then blink in the seventh, when after a single to Jordan Walker and a stolen base, Nolan Gorman singled in the game-winning run.

Gray claimed the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk, while Imanaga was tagged with all three runs and four hits; he conceded no walks. JoJo Romero compled a four-out save despite allowing three hits and a walk.

The Cardinals kept pace with Milwaukee, still 14 games behind the streaking Brewers in the NL Central, while 3.5 behind the Mets for the third wild card spot. The Colorado Rockies pay a visit to Busch Stadium on Monday evening for the start of a three-game series. Miles Mikolas will get the start, with first pitch at 6:45 p.m.
