The Blackburn Board of Aldermen held a discussion over the absence of Mayor Kevin Lawson, as well as the recent purchase of a tractor that cost the city $10,000, during its meeting on Monday, August 11.
The board previously authorized the purchase of a Kubota model tractor, however, Lawson reportedly made what the board says was an “executive decision” to purchase a different tractor in the amount of $10,000 in cash. The city evaluated the tractor, which reportedly needs several thousand dollars in repairs to be operational. Ward 2 Alderman Bobby Steffens said a local scrapyard estimated the city could sell the tractor for about $2,000 in its current condition. The board is currently investigating if Lawson or the seller can be held financially responsible for purchasing this specific tractor without the board’s approval.
The board provided this update to more than a dozen residents seeking answers regarding the actions taken to purchase the tractor and what the board is going to do regarding Lawson, who is currently on a leave of absence. Steffens stated that he is currently fulfilling Lawson’s responsibilities and serving as the board’s president.
Lawson has not indicated if he will resign from office or not. The board also briefly discussed the process of impeachment, but the board is hesitant to go that route due to the time and money that the city would have to sink into that process. Steffens also clarified that Lawson will not be paid during his current absence.
Later in the meeting, the board tabled a street repair project scheduled for August 15-17, as well as discussions to partner with Alma to bring a police officer into the city. The board says it will reevaluate the city’s financial situation and only focus on necessary expenses at this time.
