A one-out double by Brendan Donovan allowed the St Louis Cardinals to defeat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Monday, Aug. 11 at Busch Stadium, scoring the tying and winning runs in the eighth inning.

After the Cardinals allowed an RBI groundout to Warming Bernabel and single to Brenton Doyle, the Cardinals took advantage of a walk to Nolan Gorman when Thomas Saggese singled to get on base. With Garrett Hampson brought in to pinch-run for Gorman from second, Donovan came into the game to pinch-hit for Pedro Pagés and made the at-bat count, delivering a line drive to right field to bring in both Hampson and Saggese.

Yohel Pozo had a chance to extend the lead after Donovan made it to third, but his line drive was gloved by Kyle Karros, who was able to pull off the unassisted double play to end the inning. However, Pozo would have the last word, as he caught Karros’ pop out in foul territory to close out the win.

Alec Burleson opened the scoring for the Cardinals in the third with a line drive to score Victor Scott II, one of his two hits on the night, while Saggese posted a three-for-four performance to lead the Redbird offense. Kyle Leahy claimed the win, going 2.1 innings and allowing one hit while striking out two. He came on in relief of Miles Mikolas, who went 6.2, allowing both runs in the seventh off four hits and a walk, while adding three strikeouts.

The Cardinals remain fourth in the NL Central at 61-59, still 14 games behind Milwaukee, but now three games behind the Mets in the wild card chase. Matthew Liberatore will take the bump for St Louis this evening when the series continues; first pitch from Busch Stadium is at 6:45 p.m.
