The Kansas City Royals overcame a five-run barrage in the first inning, but ended up falling 8-7 to the Nationals after a rally in the ninth inning.
Washington jumped all over Seth Lugo to start the game, scoring five runs in the opening frame. Lugo only lasted four innings, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks.
The Royals responded immediately, getting RBIs from Vinnie Pasquantino and Adam Frazier in the first, and then an RBI single from Bobby Witt Jr. in the second.
After two more runs from Washington, the Royals got back in the game with Pasquantino’s three-run shot in the fourth.
The Royals managed to manufacture another run in the eighth, as Witt tied the game with a sacrifice fly to score Tyler Tolbert.
The Nationals would get the last laugh, though, as Daylen Lile drilled an RBI single to right field off Carlos Estevez, which proved to be the game winner. Estevez took his fifth loss of the season.
Kansas City drops to 60-61 on the season, falling 9.5 games back of Detroit in the AL Central. The Royals have Thursday off before opening a series with the Chicago White Sox on Friday.
