Fayette residents will have the opportunity to convert the City Marshal position into an appointed Chief of Police after the Board of Aldermen authorized a ballot proposition for the November 2025 Election.

The board made this decision during its meeting on Tuesday, August 12. Fayette currently operates with and an elected City Marshal, but if this proposition is passed in November, the position would convert into a Chief of Police that is appointed by the city. The election is set for November 4.

The board also approved an ordinance establishing the salary for interim City Marshal Bo Wells. City Administrator Deanna Cooper says the board approved this ordinance because all wages for elected officials must be approved by ordinance.

Wells was appointed during the board’s previous meeting and will serve the remainder of the term, which ends in April 2026.
