Despite bring held without a hit for the first five innings, the Kansas City Royals jumped on the Chicago White Sox’ bullpen to claim a comeback 6-2 win Sunday, Aug. 17, their second sweep of the Southsiders this season.

Davis Martin kept the Royals off the box score until Mike Yastrzemski sent a double to left field with one out in the sixth. He was left on base after Martin got Vinnie Pasquantino to strike out. Despite three walks, Martin fanned four to turn in a quality start. Coupled with Lenyn Sosa’s home run in the first and an Edgar Quero RBI single in the sixth after a fielding error, the White Sox were on track to win their first game at Kauffman Stadium since September 2023.

The game’s course would change with two outs in the seventh, with reliever Steven Wilson on the mound. After an Adam Frazier double, Jonathan India tied the game with a fly ball over left-center field and into the fountains. After Lucas Erceg got out of an eighth-inning jam, the Royals took the lead and then some. Maikel Garcia singled home Bobby Witt Jr for the go-ahead run with two outs, then advanced to second on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. Salvador Perez then brought Garcia home with his own RBI single, followed by Adam Frazier’s two-run home run to right field. Carlos Estévez needed eight pitches to retire the White Sox in the ninth in a non-save situation.

Erceg ended up with the win, allowing one walk and a double but striking out one in the eighth. Ryan Bergert went 5.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks, while striking out seven.

The Royals improve to 63-61, nine games behind Detroit in the AL Central and four behind the Yankees in the wild card race. A critical clash with the Texas Rangers awaits the Royals as the homestand continues Monday evening, as the Rangers are 1.5 games behind the Royals. Michael Wacha is projected to start Monday evening, with first pitch at 6:40 p.m. Pregame begins at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
