Catherine Hanaway will make her return to Jefferson City next month as the new Missouri Attorney General.

The St Louis area attorney was named Tuesday, Aug. 19 by Governor Mike Kehoe as the state’s next top lawyer, succeeding Andrew Bailey following Bailey’s appointment to become a co-deputy director of the FBI. Hanaway is currently a partner in the law firm Husch Blackwell, and was the U.S. District Attorney for Eastern Missouri during the George W Bush administration from 2005 to 2009.

Hanaway’s political career featured a number of firsts. In 2003, her third term representing suburban St Louis County in the Missouri House saw her become the first woman to serve as speaker of the house, as well as the first Republican to hold the position in almost a half-century. She’ll become the first woman to serve as Missouri Attorney General. However, her two previous attempts at election for statewide office were not as successful, losing to Robin Carnahan in 2004 for Secretary of State and then finishing fourth in the 2016 Republican primary for Governor.

Hanaway will assume her new office Sept. 8.
