Bobby Witt Jr became the youngest player in Royals history to hit 100 career home runs, doing so with a rocket to the Crown Vision in center field that capped a 5-2 Kansas City victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at Kauffman Stadium.

Entering the eighth inning 0-for-3, Witt stretched his at-bat against Cole Winn to nine pitches, sending four pitches foul before connecting on a cutter for a two-run home run. At 25 years and 66 days old, Witt surpasses the previous record set in 2003 by Carlos Beltrán by over a year. He’s also the fourth player in MLB history to record at least 100 home runs and 100 stolen bases through his first four major league seasons, joining Bobby Bonds, Darryl Strawberry, and Julio Rodríguez.

Witt’s home run was among five hit out of The K on Tuesday night. The Rangers and Royals exchanged solo shots in the first, with Corey Seager getting Texas on the board first, followed by Vinnie Pasquantino’s 24th jack of the year to tie the game. Joc Pederson delivered a home run in the top of the fourth to put Texas back in front, only for Mike Yastrzemski to tie the game back up with his solo home run in the sixth. The only run not scored by a home run was in the seventh, when with the bases loaded, Winn hit Jonathan India with the first pitch in the at-bat, bringing in the game winning run.

The bases had been loaded by Hoby Milner, who failed to record an out in his seventh inning appearance. He was charged with the run on three hits to take the loss. Angel Zerpa earned his fourth win of the year, allowing just one run and one walk in 1.2 innings of relief, while John Schreiber allowed a walk in the ninth for his first save of the year. Both starters Seth Lugo and Merrill Kelly produced quality starts that turned out to be no decisions. The two home runs were the only hits allowed by Kelly, who struck out three in his six innings. Lugo allowed three hits and two walks but struck out five in 6.1 innings.

The Royals (65-61) now have the longest active win streak in baseball with five games, and are now 2.5 games behind Seattle and Boston for the third wild card spot. Detroit remains nine games ahead of KC for the AL Central lead. Noah Cameron is projected to start Wednesday evening for the Royals, with first pitch at 6:40 p.m. Pregame is at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
