The Kansas City Royals jumped out to an early lead, but couldn’t hang on in a 7-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Friday, August 22.

Kansas City opened the scoring with a three-run third inning. Bobby Witt Jr. drove home the game’s first run with an RBI single. Salvador Perez drove home two more runs later in the inning with a double.

The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the third, after a solo homer from Zach McKinstry.

Kansas City starter Ryan Bergert pitched into the sixth inning, before the Royals went to the bullpen. The Tigers would tie the game in the sixth after a two-run homer from Riley Greene. Bergert finished his outing allowing two runs over 5.2 innings.

Bailey Falter entered the game in the seventh for Kansas City, allowing four runs on six hits as the Tigers took a 7-3 lead.

The Royals attempted to mount a comeback in the ninth, with Vinnie Pasquantino sending a two-run home run into the right field seats. The homer was Pasquantino’s 27th of the year, and marks his fifth consecutive game with a homer.

The Royals fall to 66-63, now 10.5 games back of Detroit in the AL Central and three games back of Seattle in the Wild Card. The Royals will look to even the series today. Pregame begins at 4:30, with first pitch at 5:10 p.m. on KMMO AM 1300.
