The Kansas City Current took just 55 seconds at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon to score the goal needed to claim all three points in Saturday night’s 2-0 win over the Portland Thorns, extending the Current’s hold atop the NWSL standings.
Ellie Wheeler headed home the first shot of the game, converting the pass from Izzy Rodriguez. Wheeler would then provide the assist in the 71st minute for a breakaway goal by Temwa Chawinga, setting up the Malawian’s 11th goal of the season. Goalkeeper Lorena made two critical saves early in the contest, en route to her ninth clean sheet of the season and the Current’s fifth-straight shutout of their opponent.
The Current remain 12 points ahead of Washington for the NWSL lead. KC will return home Saturday to host the North Carolina Courage; kickoff from CPKC Stadium is at 6:30 p.m.
