Sporting Kansas City had no answer for Danny Musovski, as the Seattle forward bagged a hat trick to lead the Sounders to a 5-2 win Sunday, Aug. 24 at Lumen Field.
Musovski almost got his party started in the first 30 seconds of the game, when he was in position to place a low ball from Georgi Minoungou. However, his sliding effort was offline, and his attempt to intercept an outlet pass went over the end line. Seattle would get their first goal in the 11th minute when Kalani Kossa-Rienzi took a deflection by Zorhan Bassong and top-shelfed his shot past Sporting keeper John Pulskamp. Sporting equalized in the 36th minute when Mason Toye sent a cross from Tim Leibold into the right corner of the net. However, the Sounders would get the lead for good in the first half of stoppage time with Musovski’s first goal of the night.
Musovski added to Seattle’s lead five minutes into the second half with a header off Danny Leyva’s corner kick. Sporting pulled one back with the help of an own goal in the 53rd minute, after Daniel Salloi’s forward effort resulted in Cody Baker deflecting a pass into his own net. However, the Sounders would restore their two-goal advantage eight minutes later with a close-range goal by Snyder Burrell. Musovski secured his hat trick with a penalty kick in the 75th minute, after Seattle drew a foul in the box. Sporting were outshot 22-13, with five shots on goal to Seattle’s seven.
The loss is Sporting’s fourth straight and keeps KC on 24 points, 13th in the Western Conference and 11 points behind Austin for the ninth playoff spot with seven games remaining in the regular season. Sporting return home Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. to face Colorado.
