The Kansas City Royals got off to a fast start, scoring the first three runs in the game, but the offense couldn’t keep pace as the Royals fell 5-3 to the Detroit Tigers on Friday, August 29.
Mike Yastrzemski led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer to get things started for Kansas City. Bobby Witt Jr. extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a single to right field. He would then come home to score on Maikel Garcia’s two run homer into the left field bullpen, making it 3-0 Kansas City.
Detroit got two runs back in the second inning, scoring on Kerry Carpenter’s two-run single. Riley Greene added a two-run double in the fourth to give Detroit the lead. All four runs were charged to Seth Lugo, who lasted only 3.1 innings, giving up eight hits and four walks.
Dillon Dingler added a solo home run in the eighth to give Detroit some insurance.
Despite the good start in the first, the Royals offense was held in check by the Detroit bullpen, and were shut down in the ninth by Will Vest.
The Royals fall to 69-66, 9.5 games back of Detroit in the AL Central, and three games back of Seattle for the wild card. Kansas City will look to even the series today. Stephen Kolek will make the start. Pregame coverage begins at 5:30, with first pitch at 6:15 p.m. on KMMO FM 102.9.
