A Boonville man is facing charges that he opened fire on another vehicle along Interstate 70, resulting in a two-vehicle crash at the Marshall Junction.

Prosecutors in Saline County are charging 18-year-old Mason Mayhew with first degree assault, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon from a moving vehicle. According to a probable cause statement, troopers investigating a two-vehicle collision at the westbound I-70 intersection with U.S. Route 65 after 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27 discovered bullet holes above the rear passenger tire and front passenger seat headrest, as well as a shattered rear passenger window. Two shell casings were recovered from the scene. Troopers say witnesses who were driving along the interstate observed a Nissan Altima and Ford Focus driving at a high rate of speed. The statement notes the witnesses telling deputies they observed the Nissan’s driver extending his arm out the window holding a firearm, then firing the gun at the Ford, resulting in the crash with a third vehicle.

Troopers then reviewed traffic camera footage, which they say showed the Nissan pursuing the Ford just past Exit 101 in Boonville. Cameras in the eastbound lanes then spotted the Nissan traveling away from the scene. Troopers says they then identified the driver as Mason Mayhew based upon a traffic stop involving the Nissan in the St Louis area last June. Mayhew was arrested on unrelated charges Thursday night in Southwest Kansas. Troopers then obtained a recording of calls Mayhew made from the Meade County Jail, which troopers say contained Mayhew describing the incident.

A warrant for Mayhew’s arrest says that Mayhew will be held without bond upon his return to Missouri. No court date has yet been set, as he will need to be extradited from Kansas.
