Missouri Valley Vikings goalkeeper Marina Barbara Bujalance is this week’s Heart of America Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, following her four saves in Saturday’s 1-0 win over 16th-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan.
Bujalance posted the clean sheet, capped by a last-second save, to record the 12th-ranked Vikings’ first shutout of the year. This is Bujalance’s third weekly award in the senior’s career. The Viking women will have another top-20 showdown Tuesday, Sept. 2 when they host fourth-ranked Columbia College at Volney C Ashford Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
The ninth-ranked men’s soccer team overcame an early deficit, bagging two second-half goals to defeat Morningside on Monday afternoon 2-1 in Baldwin City, Ks.
The Mustangs’ only shot on goal in the first half turned out to be the only goal allowed in the half, as Tassilo Koerner buried his shot just three minutes into the contest. Missouri Valley went on the offensive, recording four shots in the first half, including two on goal that were both saved by Tim Teschner. Morningside switched their goalies at the half, and the Vikings capitalized by peppering Timon Koerber with seven shot attempts, four on goal. Valley equalized just after the 60-minute mark when Taiga Matsumoto set up Shiko Kiyomiya’s score. The Vikings jumped ahead in the 89th minute when Jacob Adams headed the game-winner home off a free kick from Rodrigo Diaz.
The win is Mo Valley’s first of the season, bringing their record to 1-1-1. The Vikings will open their conference schedule next Tuesday, Sept. 9 when they host Benedictine.
